What are PTFE Fabrics & Where it is Used

PTFE stands for polytetrafluoromethane, a fluoropolymer that is a synthetic polymer. In polytetrafluorethylene, the main constituent is tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), a fluoropolymer containing carbon and fluorine molecules.

PTFE is known for its hydrophobic properties, which means that water cannot pass through this synthetic material because it has a low dielectric constant. As a result of this property, PTFE is highly popular for applications that need to block water on a large or small scale.

How Plunkett Discovered PTFE:

In 1938, Dr. Roy Plunkett, a scientist at the International Corporation, accidentally discovered PTFE. Plunkett made polytetrafluoroethylene in the process of developing a new form of chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant at the time when International Corporation was the world leader in synthetic textiles.

In Plunkett’s experiment, a white, slippery substance appeared on the inside of the bottle after an unexpected reaction in the refrigerant development process. PTFE was patented in 1941 by Kinetic Chemicals, a joint venture between General Motors and International Corporation.

PTFE became popular as a nonstick coating on cookware in the mid-1950s. Companies immediately embraced a cookware coating due to its high heat resistance and hydrophobic properties.

How Is PTFE Fabric Made?

PTFE is produced by polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene (TFE). As a result of the combination of fluorspar, hydrofluoric acid, and chloroform, TFE is formed. Pyrolysis uses high temperatures to combine these three ingredients into TFE. Under high pressure and low temperatures, the resulting gas is converted into a liquid.

Transporting TFE isn’t common due to its volatility. TFE is usually made on-site by PTFE manufacturers. As initiators for PTFE production, disuccinic acid and ammonium persulfate may be used, as well as large amounts of water.

It is possible to manufacture PTFE in a variety of different ways once TFE has been acquired, and most manufacturers of this fabric do not share their production process trade secrets. Dispersion polymerization and suspension polymerization are two basic processes used to make PTFE.

How Is PTFE Fabric Used?

There are a variety of applications for PTFE. As a result of its high dielectric strength, PTFE is used in the computer industry for nearly 50 percent of the world’s supply. As well as its use on manned and unmanned space missions, NASA has used PTFE to make insulation for wires in extreme weather conditions such as Antarctica since its first use on the Apollo missions.

Bearings, bushings, gears, seals, and gaskets also use PTFE because of its low coefficient of friction, and it is common in aerospace carbon fiber composites. PTFE is widely used in outdoor industrial applications, as well as to coat the outsides of flexible architectural materials due to its UV resistance. The roof of the Minneapolis Metrodome, for example, is coated with PTFE to make it UV-resistant and easy to maintain.

Non-stick pans are the context in which consumers have most commonly come into contact with PTFE, which is used in dozens of other industrial and scientific applications.
